❝ Even on the poorest streets people could be heard laughing. Some of these streets were completely dark, like black holes, and the laughter that came from who knows where was the only sign, the only beacon that kept residents and strangers from getting lost.— Roberto Bolaño, 2666

HISTORY

Diego was born in a small, poor, Turali village on an even smaller farm to which he was originally intended to inherit upon his father's passing. Upon realizing that there was more meaning to life beyond dirt pastures and cow's milk, he thrusted himself into a life of academia, categorizing urban legends, rituals, occult games, and spirits, eventually leading him to write the first prototype of On the Nature of Spirits. His younger brother, Mateo, was closely involved in his work up until Diego left the farm to pursue his studies overseas, to his parents' dismay. Eventually, he managed to find himself on a cargo ship bound for Eorzea, and ended up enrolling in a boarding school in La Noscea, paying for his tuition with meager wages he earned as an apprentice in the Arcanist's guild.
After two years, Diego re-established contact with his family through postcards postmarked from his outpost in La Noscea, with all but the initial postcard being returned to sender. Several springs after he had moved on from La Noscea, a letter from his parents arrived, forwarded to his current apartment on the same day he had managed to land an interview with the current department chair of Paranormal Studies at the Studium in Old Sharlayan. The letter bitterly detailed that Mateo was killed while on a hunt for the fabled creature of legend, the Cadejo.

WILD MAGIC SPELLBOOK

SpellEffect
Angel's SnackA common spell taught to wild magic practitioners from Tural. A spell attributed to the Turali guardian statues wherein the caster manifests a spread of aetherial treats with panacean properties. Those nourished by the feast find their wounds quickly closing.
Aqua BreathDiego's first spell. Because of his inexperience with wild magic and his lack of practice, most oral-channeled spells end up being some variation of Aqua Breath, unless he really concentrates.
Choco MeteorA wild magic spell that Diego mimicked from a bright red Chocobo imported into Tuliyollal. The dust and dirt in the area is drawn up into one solid mass, heated until it glows, then dropped on a target from on high.
DoomDiego claims this came to him in a dream a few days prior to notice of his brother's eventual passing. He refuses to use this spell, as it fills his mind with overwhelming dread and malice. Oft cast by voidsent in the New World, this mortal curse merely hints that one's time may be nigh.
Heartless AngelAn interesting trick that manifested after attempting to learn the wild magic spell Angel Whisper, Diego can channel a familiar that appears for all the world to be a messenger from the heavens, but performs exactly the opposite of the aforementioned spell, completely draining the target's energy. Diego claims it also came to him in a dream following his attempt to learn Angel Whisper. Additionally, due to how taxing this spell is, performing this spell will leave him more or less incapacitated for the rest of the day.
Saintly BeamLearned after an expedition following a lead of a rumored phantom train trekking the Garlemaldian countryside, this purifying light burns away restless spirits and consumes tainted souls.
Tentacle WallopLearned on a beach trip with his family at a very young age and a resulting attack from a massive cephalopod, Diego can summon a large aether tentacle; its size proportional to the amount of aether he can channel on a whim. Can also be glamoured to mimic arms or other appendages.
